The City of Mesa will begin work to widen Ellsworth Road to three lanes in each direction between Ray Road to Germann Road. The project also includes traffic signal upgrades, landscaping, signage and roadway striping.
Ellsworth Road from Loop 202 to German Road completed roadway section
Scheduled to take place beginning Dec. 18 for approximately two weeks, crews will conduct potholing activities at various locations during night hours (9 p.m. to 4 a.m.) to identify the specific depth and location of underground utilities to minimize conflicts during construction.
During this time, Ellsworth Road (northbound and southbound lanes) will be CLOSED to traffic at Willis/Pecos Road for crews to install utilities across Ellsworth Road. Work is scheduled to take place during night hours beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19 until 4 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22. Detour signage will be in place to direct travelers around the closure area, and the roadway will be restored to normal travel during daytime hours.
The overall project will take place in phases, with completion expected in February 2027:
· Phase 1: Construction of Ellsworth Road northbound lanes
· Phase 2: Construction of Ellsworth Road southbound lanes
· Phase 3: Construction of center median modifications
To minimize disruption during construction, each phase will be completed in segments (see Phase 1 segment map below).
Scheduled to begin Jan. 5, 2026, crews will work in Segment 1 of Phase 1, the northbound lanes of Ellsworth Road, from Germann Road to Willis/Pecos Road. To accommodate this work, northbound Ellsworth Road will be reduced to one lane from south of Germann Road to Willis/Pecos Road. Northbound restrictions will be in place 24/7. Southbound traffic should not be affected. As work is completed, crews will move northbound to the next segments.
